Trust Your Creativity

The key to creating the perfect creative space is finding a place to be free. Defining your space as an extension of yourself and your aesthetic helps to harness your creative energy and ideas. The elements of a creative space include size, design, and purpose. Whether you are a fine artist, designer or maker, all creators need a creative space.

Selecting A Size | How To Create A Creative Space

The size and shape of your creative space is essential to it's functionality. Make sure to give yourself enough room to move and carry out all the activities you want to do. Selecting a space with enough light is also key for anything visual, make sure you have a way to diffuse too much light if need be, for optimal lighting a North or South facing window is best behind you for relatively even light throughout the day.

Designing The Decor | How To Create A Creative Space

Surrounding yourself with decor that feels like an extension of yourself is so important when designing the decor of your creative space. Include previous work of yours that you love to look back on, sentimental items or meaningful pieces, as well as greenery in the form of real or faux plants is one of my favourite ways to bring life to a space.

Perfect for Purpose | How To Create A Creative Space

One of the best ways to make your creative space work for you is to place essential items, tools, and materials in easy to reach and access places. This keeps your space more organised while you're working, and makes clean up super fast. Storing items according to colour and category is my go-to method, and if you're looking for a crash course in creative organisation my recommendation is watching a few episodes of the Netflix series 'The Home Edit' who are an inspiring stylist duo in America, sharing the best tips and tricks for keeping any space perfect.

Tips & Tricks | How To Create A Creative Space

1. Use colour sparingly and with clarity. Be purposeful about your use of colour, I find that a space with too much going on creates sensory overload and impedes my creative process.

2. Reflect on your daily routine. How do you generally go about your day, what times of the day are you more creative? Thinking about when and how you will use the space will help you to make it better suited to your needs.

3. Include lots of storage. One thing I have noticed about creatives is we are often obsessed with collecting things! Make sure you have ample storage visible or hidden for your favourite things.

4. Connect with your inner muse. Knowing what inspires you is key to consistency and drawing on your creativity at will. Activities like creating a moodboard, are perfect for identifying your influences and focusing your mind.

5. Space to grow. When designing your creative space it's important to think of longevity for the future, and where the space will take you. If you're a fine artist for example, you may want to consider how your space will assist you in working on multiple paintings or commissions at once down the line, as well as smaller projects to begin with.

6. Utilise the five senses. Include elements of design that you can see, feel, hear, smell and taste! Whether it’s burning incense or having your favourite snacks within easy reach, make sure to include what works best for you to keep you in the creative zone.
