Halloween with MUA Phoenix Renata

The spookiest time of year is the perfect occasion for a special collaboration…

A fresh rendition of an old classic, one of the most timeless on Halloween eve. The vampire queen is something that I’ve seen many renditions of, and to create the perfect makeup look I asked none other, than blogger and makeup artist Phoenix Renata.

Earlier this year Phoenix and I collaborated on her interview and photoshoot feature all about experience and journey owning and operating her company she built, Phoenix Cosmetics. You can read the full feature here, follow her on Instagram here, and on Facebook.

We worked together to create the perfect look for a more classic version of Vampire Queen. I was inspired by Gypsy vampires, from the old movies. We wanted something dark, beautiful and a little shimmery. I styled the session and Phoenix created a custom makeup look at her Grey Lynn studio, and by the afternoon I was underway in my Halloween transformation! I brought contact lenses to make my eyes a deeper and brighter blue, as well as little fangs from Body FX and it was very much worth it! The location, pictured below right is a handy little Auckland spot which is in fact a church in need of renovation. Perfect for that old, dilapidated atmosphere.

I photographed this set in the late afternoon to catch the evening light, and my goal was to capture the golden hour, as well as the feeling of the architecture. Light was streaming through the church windows and as they’re a tinted green it created a creepy glow that was pretty impressive. The vibe was beautiful and dark, I wore my Grandmother’s dress which is a piece from the 70’s, and a tiara that I designed to emulate the old Romanian vampires a little. It worked pretty well, as I pinned it under my hairline. I decided that any other accessories would be too excessive for this look, minimal is often so much more striking. Even though this was not what I did with my Halloween eve, it was a great way to get the spooky season started…
